When merging using the $ROOT envar, portage reads /etc/make.conf and /etc/make.profile which doesn't make much sense. I'm trying to cross-compile the entire fresh gentoo for ARM arch but when $ROOT is ignored, the ARCH and CHOST are set to the build-system values which renders the entire "cross-compilitaion" useless.
