Is this with a specific mp4 file or with all mp4 files? If its specific to one then could this be shared? To get better segfault output could you rebuild vlc with debugging symbols and then get the backtrace with gdb. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Debugging#Installing_debugging_information_for_packages
This behavior started with the previous version of vlc and would seemingly randomly not load and play some mp4s from file manager window with double click. At times iIt was necessary to open vlc, then drag the mp4 into the vlc. Sometimes a double click would work the first video, but not subsequently. I would need specific instructions of how to buil vlc with debugging.
Have attempted to follow the directions here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Debugging#Installing_debugging_information_for_packages but get no output from gdb on the command line. What is the correct syntax to obtain this information?
Once you have debugging information in the package run. `gdb --batch -ex run -ex bt --args vlc <more arguments>` This should start vlc where you can recreate the issue and get a crash with a backtrace. You can also run the gdb command manually like instead of batch mode like above. `gdb --args vlc <more arguments>` where you have to give commands like run, bt and quit.
I suspect this is either a dupe of bug 920185 (which I've just committed ffmpeg-6.1-r3 for) or bug 915384 (which has a workaround in there). Please test and let us know.
