in cases where the directory  /var/cache/apache2 does not exist (fresh install of gentoo).
After creating the directory apache2 starts successful with '-D SSL'

Me too(tm). However, unlike in the reporter's case, this actually occurred after a rebuild of apache-2.0.52-r1 (i.e. the same version was already installed and working prior). Creating the directory corrected the issue as described above.
