Description Ian Truelsen 2005-04-29 08:10:45 UTC
xorg 6.8.2 builds fine, but when I try to run it, it crashes with several of the following type of messages:

Symbol firegl_PM4Alloc from module /usr/lib/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.o is unresolved!

I am attaching my Xorg.0.log file from an attempt to run Xorg -configure. The result is typical.

I forgot to mention that, following the resolution in another bug, I rebuilt xorg with USE="dlloader" but that did not have any effect.

dllloader should be disabled.
Comment 6 Ian Truelsen 2005-04-30 09:04:30 UTC
I rebuilt it without dlloader, but the result is exactly the same.
Comment 7 Ian Truelsen 2005-05-03 13:51:24 UTC
Anything else that I can try? I would really like to get beyond the command line :)
Comment 8 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2005-05-04 01:59:12 UTC
emerge -vp xorg-x11 and at-drivers now and please attach your .config and your dmesg log

how did you produce the xorg.conf?

Comment 12 Ian Truelsen 2005-05-04 07:20:10 UTC
I have not created a xorg.conf file. I am trying to run Xorg -configure. I tried creating one by hand, but ran into the error and tried the -configure route. No matter what I try, I still get the unresolved symbols.
Comment 13 Ian Truelsen 2005-05-06 13:09:03 UTC
Is there anything that I can try here? I can't believe that this computer is simply incapable of running xorg.
Comment 14 Christopher Zapart 2005-05-09 09:08:52 UTC
The same problem with ati-drivers-8.12.10 freezing the system on a P4 x86. The thing
is, for some reason they have been marked x86 stable but they are far from
being stable! I believe this package should be marked "unstable" instead.

Why can't ATI ever write quality Linux drivers for their cards? I am beginning to deeply
regret buying an ATI graphics card. Should have gone for Nvidia instead and avoided
all that grief.
Comment 15 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2005-05-09 16:17:34 UTC
You should use fglrxconfig to produce the xorg.conf file.
Comment 16 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-06 16:51:27 UTC
Have you tried:

1) Re-merging ati-drivers
2) emerge -uavDN world
3) The newer (~x86) drivers
Comment 17 David Leverton 2005-07-13 05:03:51 UTC
Do you use the synaptics driver? I had the same problem after upgrading to
xorg-x11-6.8.2-r2, but it worked after remerging x11-misc/synaptics.
Comment 18 Matthew Tippett 2005-08-17 21:40:24 UTC
Please verify with 8.16
Comment 19 Jeremy Day 2005-10-25 19:59:54 UTC
I have this same problem with ati-drivers-8.18.6. Previous drivers were working
fine but I get this same problem with them now too. Never had problems until the
upgrade.

Comment 23 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2005-10-26 02:12:57 UTC
disable the dlloader for now please
Comment 24 Jeremy Day 2005-10-26 13:42:26 UTC
Disabling dll loader will have no effect since the previous ati-drivers were
working fine and I havent rebuilt xorg.
Comment 25 Jeremy Day 2005-10-26 17:56:53 UTC
Well I rebuild xorg-x11 with USE="-dlloader" and now it works. I find this odd
though since the previous drivers worked with +dlloader and I never had this
problem before upgrading drivers.
Comment 26 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2005-10-26 17:59:13 UTC
I'm still working on the new driver, hopefully I'll port the relink hack soon
(in the mean time xorg .99 support added)

I have reported a similar problem (see bug #128959). I have emerged xorg-x11 with +dlloader and -dlloader (details see my bug report). This does not help.

What is the actual solution to this bug?

Closing ancient bug. File a new one if something like this still happens.
