I tarred up the workdir of this with -ggdb3 and USE=debug and put it on toucan in ~lisa/glibc-2.3.5.tar.bz2 i hope it helps...

Okay... this can't be "critical" - I can't emerge anything past glibc on ~x86 hence blocker.

Lisa, are your coreutils static?  This might be bug #90836
