this is from the doc-team mailing list. i will post a patch to alsa-guide just as soon as i can get it written (<30 min hopefully)
Created attachment 56572 [details, diff] alsa-guide.xml.diff diffnut'd this _should_ resolve all the issues on the mailing list, i am posting this bug there just in case it doesn't
Created attachment 56574 [details, diff] alsa-guide.xml.diff ...ever so slightly modified...
Jonathan: the result is like this: """ <warn> If you are using <c>genkernel</c>, you do not have the following choice. Please continue with the portage version of ALSA. </warn> <note> If you use a 2.6 kernel, as is now the default for most people, you may use the drivers provided in the kernel, or you can use the portage package media-sound/alsa-driver. The benifit of using in-kernel drivers is that you do not have to re-emerge a package every time you update your kernel, whereas many people consider using portage to be simpler than mucking through pages and pages of menuconfig. If you want to use the drivers provided with your kernel, you can skip the rest of this section and continue with <uri link="#alsa-utils">Installing the ALSA Utils</uri>. </note> """ I think that: 1. It is better to have the warning after the note, as the warning refers to it (better to refer to something that's already read than something to be read and then return to the warning 2. The sentence "whereas many people consider using portage to be simpler than mucking through pages and pages of menuconfig." doesn't read right imo. What does it mean and why is it placed there? 3. Why use a <note>? A regular paragraph is perfectly fine here...
I agree with Sven here and also propose that we add a small code example right there for people who *want* to configure ALSA in the kernel as well. Its not too much...what say? I could write up a patch for it. PS : I'm all for kernel ALSA :p
I'd say the guide needs an overhaul :p
its all yours, Mani
Righto. Thanks!
Periodically, the situation is that kernel drivers are older/different version that what alsa-driver provides. One related issue with documentation that I have encountered, is that it is not explained how to determine the version of the ALSA drivers in kernel (at least I did not find this information)
cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.8 (Thu Jan 13 09:39:32 2005 UTC). Thanks for asking :) I'm re-writing this doc and will add this little tidbit there as well. PS : I'm using Kernel ALSA
Bug 92622 for further info on this. Thanks.
