The stage3 image now also includes complete linux sources and a Portage tree snapshot, eliminating the need to do an emerge sync later. However, stage3-i686_pentium4-1.4_rc1.tar.bz2 I downloaded from ibibilio does not contain a portage tree. Same with kernel sources. Thus, an emerge sync is mandatory. So, either the documentation is wrong, or the portage tree is missing from the stage3 tarball - at least for the one I downloaded. Thanks, Jeff Kowing
I think this bug duplicate bug #8805
I am almost never successful with using the Bugzilla query mechanism. Don't know what my problem is! But it is important to note that bug #8805 does not mention that the entire portage tree is missing. Bug #8805 just talks about the missing kernel sources. I don't believe the kernel sources are part of the actual portage tree.
Sorry, it was my mistake - the right duplicate is bug #8072. So we still don't know how the 1.4 final will look like.
