Comment 1 Martin Gollowitzer 2005-04-10 12:49:06 UTC
My KDE/aRts system worked properly until today, when I tried to call a friend via Skype and I got some strange sounds after changing my portage profile from 2004.3 to 2005.0. After that, I also got this message everytime I tried to use a program that uses aRts (e.g. Juk or XMMS). My aRts process uses about 80-90 percent of my CPU before it crashes. When aRts died and I tried to restart it via the 'artsd' command, it crashed after about 30 seconds with the same error. Nevertheless, it didn't crash immediately after rebooting my computer as reported by Daniel.
Comment 2 Gregorio Guidi (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-13 07:30:52 UTC
It could be caused by the alsa drivers in the kernel you're using (see bug 4561).
It can also be a more general problem, high cpu usage can happen quite a lot with arts (see bug 75390 for instance).
In any case, I don't think we can do much for it...

Comment 3 Martin Gollowitzer 2005-04-13 08:44:20 UTC
I do not think that it is a driver problem because it worked all the time and suddenly after changing the profile to 2005.0 it didn't work anymore (maybe also because of the skype crash, I am not sure about this point). Anyway I started artsd with -l 0 and will append the output:

artsd version is 1.4.0

Comment 4 Martin Gollowitzer 2005-04-16 04:38:06 UTC
This sort seems to be some Intel 8x0-ALSA-aRts-problem. I modified my kernel and removed ALSA from the config. Then I emerged alsa/driver and tried it again >> it still didn|t work. then i emerged alsa driver with USE="oss" and tried to use the oss emulation, which worked. weird thing

Your problem may also be related to bug 87544, then.
