My machine is a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V2020 laptop with Intel 855GME chipset. The ALSA modules is snd_intel8x0. Ecasound does work with this alsa-lib. mplayer, xmms and alsa-lib-1.0.9-rc2 work fine on my desktop which is a VIA EPIA-MII (snd_via82xx). Kernel dmesg entry of mplayer is here: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000 printing eip: c01c1d8e *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0002 [#1] PREEMPT Modules linked in: nfs lockd sunrpc pcmcia yenta_socket rsrc_nonstatic pcmcia_core snd_pcm_oss snd_mixer_oss snd_intel8x0 snd_ac97_codec snd_pcm snd_timer snd soundcore snd_page_alloc rtc video container battery thermal fan button ac speedstep_centrino evdev processor cpufreq_stats freq_table cpufreq_userspace cpufreq_ondemand cpufreq_powersave usbhid uhci_hcd ehci_hcd usbcore i915 intel_agp drm agpgart ipw2200 firmware_class ieee80211 ieee80211_crypt 8139too mii ide_cd cdrom CPU: 0 EIP: 0060:[<c01c1d8e>] Not tainted VLI EFLAGS: 00210202 (2.6.11) EIP is at memcpy+0x1e/0x40 eax: 00000004 ebx: 00000000 ecx: 00000004 edx: 00000010 esi: dcfe1ef0 edi: 00000000 ebp: dcfe1f00 esp: dcfe1ec0 ds: 007b es: 007b ss: 0068 Process mplayer (pid: 8595, threadinfo=dcfe0000 task=deb58060) Stack: 00000003 ffffffea dcffb214 dcfe1ef0 bfffc950 dff3dfad ffffffea dcffb214 dff3edce de736940 de73696c de794964 00000006 00000000 00000000 00000000 00000005 00000001 00000000 00000000 00008002 00000000 00000000 00000000 Call Trace: [<dff3dfad>] snd_timer_user_append_to_tqueue+0x3d/0x50 [snd_timer] [<dff3edce>] snd_timer_user_params+0x28e/0x2a0 [snd_timer] [<dff3f0f2>] snd_timer_user_ioctl+0x132/0x240 [snd_timer] [<c016578a>] do_ioctl+0x6a/0xa0 [<c01659ce>] vfs_ioctl+0x5e/0x1d0 [<c0165b7d>] sys_ioctl+0x3d/0x70 [<c01030af>] syscall_call+0x7/0xb Code: ff ff ff c3 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 90 83 ec 14 89 5c 24 08 89 c3 89 c8 89 74 24 0c c1 e8 02 89 d6 89 7c 24 10 89 ca 89 df 89 c1 <f3> a5 f6 c2 02 74 02 66 a5 f6 c2 01 74 01 a4 89 d8 8b 74 24 0c Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install alsa-lib-1.0.9-rc2 2. Install xmms and/or mplayer 3. Run mplayer or xmms with ALSA output 4. Start playing a song (wav, mp3 and ogg vorbis tested) Actual Results: Segmentation fault. Program exits, but the process is left in the background. It is terminated with ordinary kill (TERM signal). Expected Results: Played music. Are you using in-kernel modules, or alsa-driver ones? If alsa-driver, which version do you have loaded?

The modules from vanilla kernel 2.6.11.
