If you only have LLVM and Clang 15 installed, and not 14, the build process doesn't process the $STRINGS and other variables correctly on the configure file. I might be able to paste the build logs and emerge --info later. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Only have Clang and LLVM 15 installed, and not GCC 2. emerge -1av cairo 3. Actual Results: Emerge fails. Expected Results: Successful emerge, without an output stating that the -a command has not been found. Works just fine if you run STRINGS="llvm-strings" emerge -1av cairo instead.
Please include the full build.log and emerge --info. There's nothing actionable in this bug. I've fixed texlive-core a few minutes ago (bug 872110) but cairo itself was fixed over a year ago (bug 726200).
$STRINGS defaults to 'strings' which is a utility from the 'binutils' package. If you don't have binutils installed, the default value for $STRINGS won't work. In such cases, you probably do need to manually set STRINGS to something else. However, as I understand it, this would be the case with both CLANG/LLVM-14 and CLANG/LLVM-15. The only role I see llvm playing here is to provide an alternative for binutils's strings utility. If I'm misunderstanding something, please add the output of emerge --info and a log demonstrating the error (preferably a build log).

Ah, now I get it. 1. You're using an old LLVM (you're missing https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/commit/sys-devel/llvm?id=bdf39f35ac968c1f5656096b9c9667a3101f4f2d which creates e.g. 'strings' and such for the benefit of some installs, see bug 870577). You're also not using LLVM from ::gentoo. Upgrade. 2. You should be using the Clang profile, like I told you the other day, which sets STRINGS for you. If you manufacture not having binutils yourself, make sure you configure things correctly. Either one of those would've avoided this situation.
