I recently emerged KDE 3.0.3 on my Gentoo 1.4, X 4.2.1 Sparc64 sun4u system. Upon logging in as a normal user (w/sound enabled), I received an error message stating that artswrapper needs to be run as root in order to get the best quality. Quite annoying, IMHO. The easy fix is to setuid root on it, by running as root 'chmod +s /usr/kde/3/bin/artswrapper'... There are several discussions regarding this issue. The census seems to dictate a false alarm on the security issues resulting from the setuid on artswrapper. The only problems would occur when artsd is setuid root... I have included the links from some of this discussion below. http://lwn.net/Articles/4343/ http://www.linuxsecurity.com/advisories/debian_advisory-2303.htmlhttp://www.linux-tech.com/archives/bugtraq/0143.html I don't know if this affects everyone or not, but simply put, it gets really seeing that stupid message every time. peace out Joshua Preston.
post comments to bug 7883 ... it deals with arts + setuid bits *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 7883 ***
