This problem first showed up on November 26, 2020. I have many saved copies of signed email messages -- good signatures on Nov 25 and prior, bad ones on Nov 26 and after. I filed a bug report upstream at KDE, about four or five months ago. They told me it had already been patched, and that I should just wait for the patch to show up in Gentoo. I'm tired of waiting. The bug was associated with "protected headers": Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; protected-headers="v1" The last bit of that header record added by KMail's composer was not being included in the big ball of wax fed into the cryptographic signature algorithm -- that's what the guys at KDE told me, anyway. Or something like that. I have tested this on several different Linux distros. Manjaro (KMail 5.17.4) Not a problem KDE Neon (KMail 5.17.4) Not a problem openSUSE Tumbleweed (KMail 5.17.2) Not a problem Gentoo (KMail 5.17.3) It's a bug! I have even started to learn about using "kdesrc-build", to build KMail from the KDE "Gitlab" repo. I have built KMail 5.17.40 alpha (main branch) on three distros. Manjaro Not a problem Tummbleweed Not a problem Gentoo It's still a bug! This really puzzles me. I compiled 106 KDE modules (KMail and all its KDE dependencies) on all three systems. I even tried enabling re-compilation of about half-a-dozen "Qt5" programs on GEntoo, but with no luck. All I can think of is that the linker must be pulling in some non-KDE piece from the Gentoo system (/usr/bin or /usr/lib64) -- either that, or the KDE dependencies aren't working wuite right. I have attached screenshots of several email messages to illustrate what I'm talking about. Thank you for looking at this. I'll be glad to share log files or anything else that you might find useful.

Oh, yeah. I always forget this bit. Sorry. (I have two versions of Gentoo. Running systemd right now ... I also have initrc, which is the one I use most of the time. The other version has more compilers ... I'll post that info later.) david@localhost ~ $ emerge --info Portage 3.0.20 (python 3.9.5-final-0, default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/plasma/systemd, gcc-10.3.0, glibc-2.33, 5.10.27-gentoo-x86_64 Also, I should mention that if I both sign and encrypt an email with KMail running under Gentoo, the signature is fine. I'll try uploading a picture of that. Maybe a picture will upload OK today. (I don't think an encrypted raw email message would be useful.)

The cryptographic signature no longer works correctly in openSUSE Tumbleweed. The only change I can find in the zypper history file that might be related is this. 2021-07-04 14:52:10|install|kmailtransport|21.04.2-1.1|x86_64||openSUSE-20210701-0|f0d927fd6080317cdbcab2612590413fe6f2c26945e291314ce3535850499698| (from the original installation via USB stick) 2021-07-06 15:01:44|install|kmailtransport-lang|21.04.2-1.2|noarch||repo-oss|c73c68c13055e69d8a9a74c205036b6687f82daf49e1e2432e4933c18280e69b| (from an update in the online Tumbleweed repos) The bug does not affect openSUSE LEAP 15.3. Nor has it yet crept into Manjaro Linux.
I have nstalled and run kmail 21.04.2 (5.17.2) on my systemdd instance of Gentoo Linux. This bug persists in that test version of kmail. I'll try 21.04.3 in a little while.
Please report this upstream and post the link to it here* so we can track the issue, especially since you have been reproducing this in other distributions anyway and we will want to stabilise 21.04.3 soon. * since you already filed one, why not already paste the link?
(In reply to David C. Bryant from comment #0) > Manjaro (KMail 5.17.4) Not a problem > KDE Neon (KMail 5.17.4) Not a problem Version 5.17.3 is synonymous with 21.04.3 which is the latest release. So I'm really wondering what they are packaging for you there. In case you haven't yet, please try with KDE Frameworks 5.84.

I will report this bug upstream once again. I'm hesitant to do that, because I got a scolding of sorts the first time i reported it. But I would like to get this fixed.
(In reply to David C. Bryant from comment #18) > I will report this bug upstream once again. I'm hesitant to do that, because > I got a scolding of sorts the first time i reported it. Where is the link to that bug then?
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=439958 Bug report filed upstream. I re-installed Tubleweed, and now it also fails to create a valid signature.I'll let you know if that gets patched (5.17.2 worked OK; 5.17.3 fails).
Where is the old report?
(In reply to Andreas Sturmlechner from comment #21) > Where is the old report? I can't find it. It wasn't a bug report ... I asked a question on "gitlab". I've looked around to find it, but so far no luck. I should have saved the email message ... I think it's in the kde-pim message thread somewhere. I'll hunt for it tomorrow. Whoever maintains Tumbleweed may patch this soon ... it was working correctly in 5.17.2, but Tumbleweed recently pushed 5.17.3, and the bug re-appeared. It also re-appeared in KDE Neon, when they went from 5.17.2 to 5.17.3. I'm not sure where to look for their commitss, but I'll try to figure it out.
Created attachment 724420 [details] Message from D. Bryant to Sandro Knauss I guess I did file a bug report. Sandro closed it as unconfirmed. I'll try to find it.
I think this is the bug report I was thinking of. I didn't file it, but I did read it a few months ago. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=427091
The supposed fix in that bug was added in 5.16.1, which would have been 20.12.1.
So, to recap: You didn't file the bug where I didn't read a scolding of sorts. Gentoo provides you with the latest available upstream versions of KDE PIM and its dependencies. If the error is reproducible there, and you already established it is happening in other distributions too, then the place to get your issue solved is upstream. As the one who can reproduce the bug, you are the person best suited to follow-up on it with them, and as a Gentoo user you can easily test any patch they might send your way by means of epatch_user.
(In reply to Andreas Sturmlechner from comment #14) > we will want to stabilise 21.04.3 soon. No blocker for stabilisation as it was already present pre-21.04.
KDE Gear 21.08 beta (and with it KDE PIM) ebuilds are now available in kde overlay for your consumption: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/KDE#Available_versions_2 We do not need further screenshots of the same content, unless something relevant changes. Please keep the list of attachments tidy with as much information as possible, but no unnecessary redundancy, same here as upstream.
