Description Horacio Hiroiti Sawame 2005-01-25 06:29:41 UTC
Mirrors like OSU Open Source Lab, Adelie Linux, Bishops University Computer Science Department do not have new portage snapshots after 22/Jan/2005.

"emerge --sync" works normal.

Is there any progress on this bug? Can the priority or severity be raised??

Thanks.
Comment 3 Dirk Heinrichs 2005-01-26 23:21:18 UTC
While we're at it. emerge-webrsync currently downloads and installs the latest portage snapshot it finds, regardless if it is the same it installed last time. Since I use a cron job to get the daily snapshot in the morning, the snapshot 22.01.2005 has now been downloaded and sync'ed with four times.

To avoid this in the future, I would propose the following:

Change emerge-webrsync to
1) not delete the snapshot archive after rsync. Only delete old ones if a newer one has been downloaded successfully and
2) if no newer snapshot than the one currently available on the local system has been found on the mirrors, just stop.

What do you think?

klieber: could you fix this asap
Comment 5 John Herdy 2005-01-27 01:55:45 UTC
yes please, emerge-webrsync is like an enterprise feature, lot's of big companies are not able/allowed to rsync through the firewall/proxy and depend totally on the snapshots, it's a shame when the security team is very fast with providing security fixes, but enterprise environments can't benefit from it due to the lack of snapshots.
Comment 6 James Roberts-Thomson 2005-01-27 12:03:33 UTC
RE Comment #3; this has been suggested in various bug reports for quite some time, and has always been "forthcoming". I have modified emerge-webrsync to do this on several occasions; but have not bothered rolling my modifications into the version that was installed on my system with portage-2.0.51-r14 yet, due to being unable to test due to the current issue.

Once snapshots are working again, I can re-add my modification to my local copy of emerge-webrsync, and can then supply the patch if required or wanted.
Comment 7 John Herdy 2005-01-28 02:05:15 UTC
sorry to bother you, but is there any update on this?

besides the nice improvements om comment 3 I suggest also better spreading the knowlegde between mirror admins (assuming klieber isn't the only person), because it's not healty if this important part of the ifrastructure is maintained by one person.
Comment 8 Daniel Kerwin 2005-01-28 03:17:31 UTC
Portage Snapshots are extermely important to my company. I really hope this bug gets fixed pretty quick otherwise we may run into serious trouble.
Comment 9 Edward Perry 2005-01-28 08:44:02 UTC
Just wanted to add my 2 cents to this problem.

I have also seen this problem since the 22nd and would be real nice to get corrected.
Comment 10 Horacio Hiroiti Sawame 2005-01-28 11:41:45 UTC
It seems fixed . There is a portage snapshot for 27/JAN/2005.

Anyone knows what happened ?
Comment 11 James Roberts-Thomson 2005-01-30 17:04:05 UTC
In case anyone is interested, I've logged bug #80148, which contains my patch to add "last successful" date support, and one or two other minor fixes.
