You might help us to locate that error by appending the output of emerge info and telling us on what you tried to emerge system, e.g. "When installing from the 2004.3 livecd,..." or "whentrying to upgrade my gentoo 1.0 install,..."
Was trying a new install from 2004.3 minimal LiveCD (install-x86-minimal-2004.3-r1.iso) then used the stage2 for i686 (stage2-i686-2004.3.tar.bz2), I flipped no switches, did this plain vanilla... The machine is a Pentium Pro 200. I don't know about a "emerge info"? Anyway, I can't get anything off the machine - mount, ftp etc doesn't exist as far as I can tell. I had to hand type the info previously provided.
This looks quite weird. Since it tries to use /usr/portage/sys-devel/gnuconfig/files/... please run: emerge sync emerge portage then retry emerge system that should fix it - at least I hope so :-)
please reopen if it doesn't work.
