Description Tim Redman 2004-12-27 12:11:59 UTC
Emerging media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r1 introduces numerous video anomalies that make X unusuable. The ebuild installs everything fine, but when X is started, windows appear with incorrect backgrounds, either from the root or sibling windows underneath it, or from previous backgrounds.

For example, when "/etc/init.d/xdm start" executes, the NVIDIA splash screen appears. That goes away to show the root desktop underneath the kdm login window. The login window is missing several widgets (mostly buttons), and the background of the window contains graphics from the NVIDIA splash screen. If a login is performed, which is difficult considering the mouse cursor isn't visible at all times and the login button doesn't appear, the KDE desktop comes up. Missing are icon text (though the drop shadows doo appear), several components of the kicker panel, and most window graphics from popup windows (kopete uses KDE Wallet to store authentication data). Also, the mouse pointer is only visible half the time, and when it is visible, a square of background underneath it is garbled.

An CTRL-ALT-F1 to go to the first console reveals cyan, white and magenta strips vertically on the screen, with the occasional horizontal line or stray pixel. No font is visible on the screen, but any text typed into the command prompt does appear as garbled CGA-looking graphics.

media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r3 does not possess this issue, though it does have some other application specific quirks that will be filed in another report.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge media-video/nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r1
2. emerge media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.6629
3. reboot or restart X

Actual Results:
see above

Expected Results:
It certainly shouldn't have done that.

Comment 1 David Renie 2005-01-10 19:25:19 UTC
I have experienced similar problems. Everything worked properly with 1.0.6111-r3. I am using an AMD64 system. I have four monitors set up across two video cards. Each video card is configured to use Twinview.

The two screens on the 4200 AGP are fine.

The two screens on the MX 4000 PCI have the previously mentioned corruption
issues.

Comment 2 STefan 2005-01-12 16:44:13 UTC
Hi folks, I have the same error on a MX 4000, using nv driver at the moment.

On nvnews.net there have been lots of reports from users that experience the same problem. This error was introduced with version 6629 of the nvidia driver and only affects cards older than MX 4000 all newer work fine. Nvidia is informed and hopefully fixes this issue in the next release of the driver

The only solution for now is to revert back to 6111, unfortunately 6111 is not working together with kernel >=2.6.10
Comment 3 Tim Redman 2005-01-12 19:59:21 UTC
Not entirely true, Stefan. Since filing this bug report, I've upgraded to 2.6.10 and have had no issues with 1.0-6111 (knock on wood). 1.0-6629 continues to mess with me, even with 2.6.10.

I spoke with a support guy at NVidia, and he seems to be very confident that the next release of the drivers will help, but he was unable to provide me with a release date, just "soon".

If a new release doesn't solve my problems, I may be forced to finally upgrade my video card. It's only about four or five years old. I've got grilled cheese sandwich crumbs in my keyboard older than that.

Tim
Comment 4 STefan 2005-01-13 13:22:06 UTC
Hi Tim,

you said you haven't had problems with 6111 under 2.6.10. Then you are not using nvidia-glx I guess, because glx of 6111 is not working on 2.6.10.

Stefan,

Here's what I have:

glxgears reports about 335fps. Not impressive performance, but it looks like it works to me.

Comment 6 STefan 2005-01-14 02:29:20 UTC
So I guess the glx issue is also card specific and on mine and some others I taklked to glx of 6111 crashes with 2.6.10.
Comment 7 Rick Morra 2005-01-18 11:30:55 UTC
I just reverted to nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r3 and nvidia-glx-1.0.6111 after 1.0.6629-r1 created unusable video, both in X11 and the framebuffer.

1.0.6111 has been working just fine with an old RIVA TNT card and a gentoo-dev -sources-2.6.10-r4 kernel (with 4kb kernel stacks).
Comment 8 Tim Redman 2005-01-18 15:52:34 UTC
Well, so much for being masked. 6629 went live and screwed me all up. I've got 6629 masked so that it doesn't try to install, but it ticks me off that the nvidia-kernel/glx maintainer would unmask it with obvious, repeatable, NVIDIA-acknowledged problems still existing.

I don't know if -r2 has the same problem, but I don't really have much to lose.

Incidentally, I swapped the TNT out for a TNT2 Ultra this weekend, and still have the same problems.

Tim
Comment 9 Stephen Torri 2005-01-26 15:12:45 UTC
I have similar corruption of the display with 6629-r2. So far I believe the driver is broken.

I can confirm this. You really should remask 6629.

I just spent a day remote troubleshooting a friend's computer because it looked like all the fonts were missing - ie. kdm login screen worked but he couldn't really type anything. Also there were horizontal lines everywhere etc...

Tried with -r1 and -r4. Downgrading to 6111 fixed corruption (altough now there is no GLX support because of the new paths introduced to xorg in recent r4 (see bug 76184)
Comment 13 Andrew Bevitt 2005-01-28 15:03:10 UTC
Try out nvidia-glx-1.0.6111-r1 it should work with the latest xorg stuff.
Comment 14 Ales Najmann 2005-01-28 15:06:12 UTC
Agree on that, similar experiences... masking this and reverting to 6111-r1 helped. Screenshot will look anoying if attach it, nothing new. I have GeForce4 MX 128MB. I hope it will be resolved by nvidia developers in the next release. What confuses me is that it's marked as stable.

Comment 15 Kelly Price 2005-01-30 09:41:23 UTC
I have similar problems while running VMWare ontop of X11, plus the inability to even run 6629 just now (it would complain of using the 6111 ABI when I had emerged up to 6629). Downgrading solved the latter. I'm local masking 6629 now.
Comment 16 Garth 2005-02-07 18:31:33 UTC
I have similar problem. In plain X, only the cursor is wrong (white square with lots of small lines of different color & width (about 8 columns of them). The size seems to be 64x64 pixel. In KDE, I have the same problem and some missing widgets (icons mostly (they can show up from time to time but dissapear when I move over them, or when affecting other part of the screen), but from time to time part of a text won't show up). The problem occurs no matter if opengl is set to xorg-x11 or nvidia (however, nvidia-glx need to be installed for xorg-x11 to recognize the nvidia driver).

Card is a PCIe N6600GT, system is amd64 (emerge info follows at the end).
version: nvidia-kernel: 1.0.6629-r1 , nvidia-glx: 1.0.6629-r1

nvidia-kernel 1.0.6111 is not an option for me since support for the 6600GT was added in 6629. I did test 6111, but the screen turned black and the comp stopped responding, and the log file doesn't seem contain any useful information.

note: I am going to report to nvidia also.

I was wanting to report that I too am having issues with 6629-r5 of nvidia-kernel. Kernel is vanilla-sources-2.6.15.1

Upon attempting to start kdm or X, all I receive is a black screen. If you look at the above, you can see that nvidia kernel module is crashing out with X. I wanted to submit this in case anyone was interested. I think it is related with Bug 7251

How do newer versions of the driver work for you?
Comment 19 Stephen Torri 2006-03-24 16:51:56 UTC
I find that nvidia-kernel 8178 works fine for me.
Comment 20 Fletch Hasues 2006-03-25 10:40:51 UTC
That driver does not support my Geforce 4 to go in my laptop (I guess nVidia has taken out support for older cards?). 7676-r2 works for my Geforce 4 to go, and the driver you mentioned works great for my Geforce 6.

Comment 21 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-09 02:14:06 UTC
The version mentioned in this bug is no longer in the tree; later versions work fine per Comment #19 and Comment #20.

Closing, if you have similar issue w/ nvidia-drivers or nvidia-legacy-drivers ebuilds, file a new bug.
