Upstream is aware and indicated the next version will accept any version of guile.

Based on the upstream comment: "With the next release, AutoGen will no longer check the Guile version. It will now be simply expected that Guile will be at or after version 2.2 and that they won't change the interface anymore." Some investigation could help us figure out if the check is just useless as-is and any compatibility issues were removed in previous releases.

Unfortunately the upstream changes are part of a humungous commit including unrelated fixes. However, it looks like 5.20 will be out soon (5.19.98 was tagged 5/Oct).
