Description Laurent CREPET 2004-12-11 01:17:50 UTC
I have a Dell workstation 470 with Adaptec ASC-39320 SCSI HBA, and one SCSI disk connected.

Immediately, I've started booting it with Gentoo 2004.3 livecd (universal). It boots successfully, but the aic79xx does not attach to the SCSI HBA.

It seems that we need a more recent driver to be able to use this card.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. boot with 2004.3 livecd (universal) x86
2. wait...
3. have a look to boot log with 'dmesg', or look when it boots

Expected Results:
See the disk attached to SCSI controler in /proc/scsi/scsi

How about some more information?

What boot options did you use? Was there an error? Have you checked syslog?
Comment 2 Laurent CREPET 2004-12-12 02:22:29 UTC
I didn't use any boot option. Sorry to not included the errors. I'll attach them on monday (back to office).

I've just added 'lspci -v' and 'dmesg' commands outputs. If you need more information, please let me know.

All recent distro I've tried have the same problem loading aic79xx module. It seems that we need a recent driver from Adaptec to fix the problem.

I've managed to install an old redhat 9 using an aic79xx 2.0.10 driver disk. I've found it there :

http://people.freebsd.org/%7Egibbs/linux/DUD/aic79xx/

Please, please... I want a solution for Gentoo... too ! Please keep me away from that old distro ;-)

No news on that issue... How can I help to solve this problem ?
Comment 8 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-22 06:35:28 UTC
Well, you do realize that you can install Gentoo from *any* disk that gives you a shell, right?

Anyway, I've looked into the kernel driver for the aic79xx as best as I can, and don't really understand what the problem is with it. Is this fixed with a 2.6.10 kernel?

If not, there isn't much I can do about it, as I have nothing to do with the kernels. The LiveCD team simply uses them.

If it is the driver, and it isn't fixed in 2.6.10, then I will reassign this to the kernel team.

I've reported this issue on livecd, but it's more a problem with the kernel used than the livecd himself. I don't know if it is fixed with recent kernel since I don't have them on a livecd.

Is there any experimental livecd that have recent kernel included ?

Since I can not install this kind of computer because of the SCSI card problem, if there is no more recent livecd, I will need to rebuild my own one (never done that with gentoo), or change the SCSI card temporary, install gentoo with recent kernel and updated aic79xx if needed, and then, re-install the original SCSI card.

Was this fixed in 2005.0?
