mysql-workbench has this dependency on mysql-connector-c++ :
  >=dev-db/mysql-connector-c++-1.1.8 =dev-db/mysql-connector-c++-1*
which makes it use mysql-connector-c++-1.1.12-r1 rather than
the stable dev-db/mysql-connector-c++-8.0.19

Is this an old leftover or intentional?
