In x11-base/xorg-server +elogind brings up elogind that have lid closure triggering sleep by default, which causes lots of rear pain for users not accustomed to systemd way of things) Why was it enabled by default (the +elogind USE-flag)? Also this elogind is not visible in rc-status report...
See https://gentoo.org/support/news-items/2020-06-24-xorg-server-dropping-default-suid.html The lid closure behaviour can be configured with the HandleLidSwitch option in /etc/elogind/logind.conf.

There's a news item. There's a configuration option for elogind to control this behavior and you can also just disable elogind if you want to run X as root. Nothing for us to do here.
