app-portage/euses, which I use regularly, began spewing a number of format error complaints after a sync yesterday.

could you try to recompile and paste the log, please? The package did not change (2.5.9 is from 2012-08-13), but perhaps your compiler who has warnings now for us?
It can also be that file formats changed and euses needs an fix upstream.

Same problem here.

I think the problem is that euses reads arches.desc .
Compared to other .desc files,
the arches.desc file is in a completely different format
and contains information which is not related to USE flags at all?
Shouldn't euses ignore this file?
