It seems (http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=11126) that the forums are frequently plagued by users who can't su to root because their user isn't in the wheel group. This stumped me as well (though fortunately I asked a friend before polluting the forums further). While it's obvious that the newbies asking these questions haven't looked at FAQs or done their searching, it's probably safe to assume that they *have* read through the Installation docs, because otherwise they wouldn't have a Gentoo system up and running. Therefore, it might be a good idea to add a note about this matter in the Installation docs. Perhaps at the bottom, in a new "Miscellany" section or the like. I realize that this kind of info really doesn't belong there, as it doesn't have anything to do with Installation, but doing so would probably help drive down forum (and I would assume, mailing list) noise on the subject.
