Description Nikolas 'Atrus' Coukouma 2004-11-17 14:59:59 UTC
Hi, this set of patches adds support for the Java Communications API. Support for it already exists in the ibm-jdk-bin ebuild, but nowhere else. This addition involves a few things:
1) making the javacomm global USE variable (and removing it from local)
2) "adding" virtual/javacomm-2. This allows ibm-jdk users to use IBM's version, if they wish. Patched ibm-jdk-bin ebuilds to note that they provide it.
3) adding an ebuild for javacomm
4) adding javacomm's license to portage

I installed the ebuild, license, and use flag changes and had no problems
except that the URL provided in the ebuild won't work unless you've visited the
SUN website before. I suggest changing it to:

http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/downloads/index.html

And providing more detailed download instructions. Alternatively, I believe
many Linux distributions include the binaries in their packages, so it may be
possible to redistribute the tar.Z file.

I would very much like to see this ebuild included in the standard Gentoo
distribution, its strange to see an rxtx ebuild but not one for the javacomm
interface it implements.

(this is an automated message based on filtering criteria that matched this bug)
'EBUILD' is in the KEYWORDS which should mean that there is a ebuild attached
to this bug.
This bug is assigned to maintainer-wanted which means that it is not in the
main tree.

Hello, The Gentoo Team would like to firstly thank you for your ebuild
submission. We also apologize for not being able to accommodate you in a timely
manner. There are simply too many new packages.

Allow me to use this opportunity to introduce you to Gentoo Sunrise. The
sunrise overlay[1] is a overlay for Gentoo which we allow trusted users to
commit to and all users can have ebuilds reviewed by Gentoo devs for entry
into the overlay. So, the sunrise team is suggesting that you look into this
and submit your ebuild to the overlay where even *you* can commit to. =)

Because this is a mass message, we are also asking you to be patient with us.
We anticipate a large number of requests in a short time.

Thanks,
On behalf of the Gentoo Sunrise Team,
Jeremy.

We won't add this package to Portage as it is provided only in the form of a pre-packaged jar: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javasebusiness/downloads/java-archive-downloads-misc-419423.html#java_comm_api-30u1

Sorry.
