After clicking in the "play" icon, rhythmox crashes. In the consloe I can read: "rhythmbox: pcm.c:2094: snd_pcm_wait: La declaración `err == 1' no se cumple. Xlib: unexpected async reply (sequence 0x5080)!" The same error appears when playing a video in totem (it also crashes on play), if I compile it with the gstreamer use flag, so it's a gstreamer related problem. Using the xine backend it plays everything nicely. In totem, the solution is to deactivate the gstreamer flag, but rhythmbox seems to only support gstreamer backend so... is there a way of make it not use gstreamer?

i had the same problem, update alsa-lib to version 1.0.7 in the portage tree. That fixes this alsa bug that is triggered by the gstreamer alsa plugin. As a matter of interest, what sound card do you have?
Thank you very much! Now finally rhythmbox works on my PC :) I'll recompile totem with gstreamer support later. My soundcard is a motherboard integrated one. From lspci: "Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)" It uses the via82xx ALSA driver.
Totem also works, but the gstreamer video plugins seem yet too young. Full screen video doesn't enlarge to cover all the desktop, and divx videos play very pixelated. But other things like its speed and precission look as good as mplayer ones. I'll recompile totem without gstreamer, but keeping an eye on it in the future.
Please open a new bug for the totem issue you have, and close this bug now the rhythmbox playing issue is fixed. I will help you sort it out. I do not believe that the GStreamer video plugins are too new.
gst-plugins-alsa-0.8.5-r1 has been added to the tree, with fixes & alsa-lib-1.0.7 dep
