sorry but "emerge info" gives the same error. I got this on another server too but the 'rm' and 'ln -s' steps worked fine there, but it already used a later version of portage.
bizar, another round of google got me this link http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.gentoo.hardened/1130 Commenting out the USE line in the make.default got me working again...
