Upstream openafs 1.8.4 was just finalized. Among other things, has support for Linux 5.3

Just a FWIW.. Openafs 1.8.4 does build against Linux 5.4rc1
Just a quick note, there is a known bug in Linux-5.4-rc2 that prevents openafs-1.8.4 from building (there is a fix pending for kbuild / modpost)
Just to reiterate and/or confirm, the current latest version of openafs in portage does *not* build against the 5.3.5. The message back is that no kernels greater than 4.2 are supported.

However -- I work on upstream Openafs and just wanted to report that the upstream openafs builds on 5.3 (and I'm currently doing some upstream testing against a linux 5.4-rc3).
