According to the project page [1], the last lead selection took place on 2016-01-01Z (which was 3 years ago). Yes. It's very overdue... also this project doesn't really need to separated out from the www and Public Relations teams anymore. I'll be working on archiving and removing it.
As of today, the news project is no more. Project page has been moved into the main namespace of the wiki and marked as an archive. New location can be found here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/News_project The news@gentoo.org address should alias to pr@gentoo.org. I'll try to lock down the gentoo-news IRC channel.
