Description Till Schäfer 2019-04-13 21:06:25 UTC
after upgrading lvm2 to sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.183 I get error messages like:

WARNING: Device /dev/sdXXX not initialized in udev database even after waiting 10000000 microseconds.

I observe the same behaviour as reported in Bug 674748 and Bug 673796 but I am still running =sys-fs/udev-239.

I tried sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.184-r1 with no luck.

Comment 2 Till Schäfer 2019-04-13 21:10:51 UTC
I have noticed the following line in dmesg:

udisks-lvm-pv-e[1268]: segfault at 0 ip 000055df8c18ff8d sp 00007ffdaa6a51b0 error 4 in udisks-lvm-pv-export[55df8c18f000+2000]

That module belongs to sys-fs/udisks-1.0.5-r2
Comment 3 Till Schäfer 2019-04-13 21:13:17 UTC
uninstalling udisks:0 did solve the problem (was pulled in by stable kodi)
Comment 4 Thomas Deutschmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-04-17 10:29:04 UTC
I am more interested in the claim

> after upgrading lvm2 to sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.183 I get error messages like

because I doubt that lvm2 is causing the problem and all bug reports we have seen have changed more than just lvm2. To prove my point: If you really have only upgraded lvm2, please tell us previous version and downgrade to that version. If only lvm2 is causing the problem, this should be a reliable reproducer.

OK, I tested the following settings in the given order, without any other changes:

0) lvm2-2.02.183 / without udisks:0 -> OK
1) lvm2-2.02.145-r2 / with udisks:0 -> OK
2) lvm2-2.02.183 / with udisks:0 -> FAILURE
3) lvm2-2.02.183 / without udisks:0 -> OK

=> only in setting 2) I get the lvm error message and the segfaulting udisks-lvm-pv-export
Comment 6 Thomas Deutschmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-04-18 12:06:36 UTC
Thanks. Which udisk version did you try (if not 2.8.2, please try) and did you rebuild version against the lvm2 version you are using just to be sure?
Comment 7 Thomas Deutschmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-04-18 12:08:20 UTC
And please tell us which package is providing udev for you.
Comment 8 Till Schäfer 2019-04-18 12:48:16 UTC
as written above:

=sys-fs/udev-239
=sys-fs/udisks-1.0.5-r2

I have rebuild udev, udisks, and lvm2 multiple times before the tests in comment #5.
Comment 9 Thomas Deutschmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-04-18 13:17:32 UTC
Could you please try using sys-fs/udisks:2 at minimum, 2.8.2 at best? When we are lucky this is just an incompatibility between udisks and lvm2 which is already addressed in recent version.

And can you please describe when you hit this? Are you using a custom initramfs? Can you reproduce on an already running system?
Comment 10 Till Schäfer 2019-04-18 13:51:51 UTC
=sys-fs/udisks-2.8.1 is also installed on the system and that is not causing any problems.

udisks:0 was pulled in by media-tv/kodi, thus there is an easy workaround by just disabling the udisks use-flag for kodi.

=> Tt might be the time to mask udisks:0 or to create a blocker for lvm -> udisks:0. Sadly, there is no lvm use-flag for udisks:0 (as it is the case for udisks:2)
Comment 11 Thomas Deutschmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2019-04-18 14:01:55 UTC
>=media-tv/kodi-18 will pull in udisks:2 so this problem will go away.

I'll add a version constraint for udisks:0 on <=sys-fs/lvm2-2.02.145-r2.
