Description giepi 2004-10-20 09:01:41 UTC
That's a problem I've encountered since I switched to gentoo from Fedora Core 1, probably because I had and outdated version, but not sure.

Last time I could successfully change my avatar, it was in fedora.
Here if I try, it simply crash

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Gaim
2. Tools/Account
3. Select an account and press "Edit" (I've the italian version, I'm translating the names on-the-fly)
4. In user option, select "Open"
Actual Results:
IT CRASHES!
I've tried to launch gaim from a xterm to see what happens and the crash text is:

Gaim has segfaulted and attempted to dump a core file.
This is a bug in the software and has happened through
no fault of your own.

It is possible that this bug is already fixed in CVS.
If you can reproduce the crash, please notify the gaim
maintainers by reporting a bug at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/bug.php

Please make sure to specify what you were doing at the time,
and post the backtrace from the core file. If you do not know
how to get the backtrace, please get instructions at
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/gdb.php. If you need further
assistance, please IM either RobFlynn or SeanEgn and
they can help you.
Abortito

Expected Results:
it should appear a box to select a new avatar

I must say that my configuration files (~/.gaim) was imported from fedora to
preserve the history and some other things

Comment 1 Gavrila 2004-10-20 12:44:23 UTC
have you tried deleting your ~/.gaim files?
Comment 2 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-20 14:03:07 UTC
Get debug output by running gaim -d and also get a backtrace from the crash.
Comment 3 giepi 2004-10-21 05:35:21 UTC
I tried rimoving .gaim/
It crashes the same

I executed gaim -d (with .gaim removed)
the tail is:

Just upgraded gaim.
Still crashes

Comment 8 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-06 08:31:46 UTC
This looks like it might be a problem with GTK+ 2.4 file selector that gaim is using. gedit >= 2.8.1 also uses this, can you guys emerge gedit >= 2.8.1 and try the "Open" file functionality?
Comment 9 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-06 08:37:59 UTC
Also, are you guys using Gnome as your desktop/wm? I'm in fluxbox and can't duplicate in either gaim or gedit.
Comment 10 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-06 08:41:22 UTC
Using gaim-1.0.3/gtk+-2.4.13, can't reproduce in GNOME. Let us know if gnome herd can help.
Comment 11 giepi 2004-12-06 12:27:56 UTC
I can open a file with gedit 2.8.1 without any problem.

It's very strange this, upgrading gaim the problem doesn't change.
It looks like the fault is of another lib/program...
Comment 12 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-06 12:37:36 UTC
One user has mentioned that upgrading gtk+ to 2.4.13-r1 fixed the problem. Try that. You might want to rebuild gaim afterwards as well.
Comment 13 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-06 13:50:43 UTC
it is unlikely that the -r1 version bump has a relevant fix, from the bt i'd it is more likely that the latest unstable gnome-vfs is a better candidate. Any of these crashers using reiser4 maybe ?

The backtrace without debugging info isn't very useful though.
Comment 14 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-13 12:33:56 UTC
You bug reporters need to re-emerge gnome-vfs and gtk+ with USE="debug" to help us find the cause of this issue.
Comment 15 giepi 2004-12-15 14:59:22 UTC
Here you are!

Hey, unmerging arts fixed the problem for me! I wasn't running it though, strange that it was crashing gaim.
Comment 17 giepi 2004-12-21 14:18:20 UTC
I haven't ever installed arts.
I'm a gnome user
Comment 18 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-14 11:53:19 UTC
I think Joseph meant to comment on Bug 66554.
Comment 19 giepi 2005-01-14 14:13:40 UTC
May it be... but gaim is still crashing... and it's not nice switch to windows to change my avatar (btw, I use gaim on windows too, same version...)
Comment 20 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-17 12:15:17 UTC
gnome herd can you take a look at the bt in comment #15 and see what you can see?
Comment 21 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-17 12:45:04 UTC
The backtrace is not very useful & misses the actual segv reason. It should be compiled with CFLAGS+=-g USE=debug and no stripping of the binaries.

There is also no info on what gaim/gtk+/gnome-vfs/glib/orbit versions are actually used.
Comment 22 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-31 11:39:01 UTC
Add "-g" to CFLAGS, "debug" to USE, and "nostrip" to FEATURES. Then rebuild all those components again and try to get another backtrace please.
Comment 23 Cayenne Boyer 2005-03-02 03:19:51 UTC
This occurs for me during signing in if the buddy list is set to sort by log size, which seemed at first to be an unavoidable crash, and for some reason the old version of gaim couldn't be found in portage so I couldn't avoid it by downgrading.
Comment 24 René Marten 2005-03-30 01:57:36 UTC
I had the same problem a fiew days ago. So I did an strace and I found something that gaim couldn't find /etc/orbitrc or $HOME/.orbitrc
I re-emerged gaim (1.2.0-r2) and orbit (2.12.1) and now it works again. No problems with the file open dialog now. (glib 2.6.3, gtk+ 2.6.4)
Comment 25 René Marten 2005-03-31 03:21:50 UTC
Hmm it crashed agaim rebuilding orbit because it failed to build and many gtk2/gnome application complained about missing orbit libs.

but with strace and gaim -D I found this:

dns[17340]: Oops, father has gone, wait for me, wait...!
dns[17276]: Oops, father has gone, wait for me, wait...!

and another similar bug report:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=149190
Comment 26 Don Seiler (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-03-31 07:57:00 UTC
That bug isn't similar to this at all. Those DNS warnings are nothing to worry about and certainly aren't related to file dialogs.

When you say "it fails to build", do you mean orbit or gaim?

Rene can you get a backtrace and/or debug log from your crashes?
Comment 27 René Marten 2005-03-31 12:39:36 UTC
@ 26: yes I cah .. but it doesn't fail to build it simply crashes when I want to open a file fo sending. The orbit stuff is another thing which was discussed in another #bug but gaim worled fine as orbit fails to build .. so to say ..

and here the backtrace:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

I'm having the same problem as this. It happens when I open gaim under gnome only. I can use gaim just fine under kde3.4 and xfce4. The instant I push anything that would create an open dialog the program crashes. When I get more time I'll give my error reports.
Comment 31 Victor Nawothnig 2005-10-13 23:20:52 UTC
Always reproducible for me.

Those of you who can reproduce, can you attach gdb backtraces? Also versions
for bonobo-related packages (I think bonobo, libbonobo, bonoboui and libbonoboui).
Comment 33 Alister Burrell 2006-01-17 11:03:49 UTC
Getting something similar to this in gentoo 2005.1 Gaim version 1.5.0
When trying to send a file as soon as the file dialogue box closes it seems to crash :(

Although on doing the backtrace I can see that it actually gets as far as opening the file transfers window before it crashes :(

I believe quite a few of the packages involved/mention in this bug have been updated since the last post. Could those (or even one) poster please let me know if this bug is still an issue?
Comment 35 Kathryn Kulick (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-06 10:33:16 UTC
Due to no responses I am going to presume that the issue is fixed and close the bug.
