This is still a problem. The odd thing, however, is that after installing media-fonts/siji, which had been shown as missing in the build.log, the package builds fine.

Yes. Thanks to sping, the problem should be clear now. My package glass-tty-vt220 has due custom pkg_postinst never rebuilded font cache. So you got a access violation, since the package tried to do this. It als explains, why after installation of media-fonts/siji it works, since that packages does rebuild correctly the font cache.
