I've got almost the same problem. The only difference is when I got to install any theme I am prompted on whether or not I want to install the theme and when I click OK nothing happens. Also, Firefox 1.0PR does not appear to be storing cookies or my cookie preferences (i.e. always allow or always deny) and my left/right/up/down arrow keys are not working inside of text boxes (e.g. such as this one) in 1.0PR. I am currently updating my laptop (which is running gentoo-sources) to 1.0PR to see if it has the same issues. I just fixed my problem by copying my .mozilla directory into .mozilla_backup then deleting the .mozilla directory and starting Firefox. When Firefox prompted me on whether or not to import settings, I choose to import settings. This restored my bookmarks, however all my themes and extensions were gone. I tried reinstalling Noia eXtreme 2.77 and it worked like a charm. Cookie settings are being remembered and my left/right/up/down arrow keys are working again. Don't know if this will fix your problem. I definately recommend you backup the .mozilla directory before you delete it, though.
This is a problem of profile corruption between versions of firefox. I've tried to workaround some of it in recent versions of mozilla-launcher, but unfortunately it's ultimately something to be solved upstream. It's not a fun thing to do, but when this occurs: quit from firefox mv .mozilla/firefox .mozilla/firefox-$(date +%Y%m%d) firefox
