Not sure why it failed on your mirror but using http://distfiles.gentoo.org/distfiles/verbiste-0.1.44.tar.gz it works just fine.
Any updates on this fetch failure ?
Just checked the URL in your build.log. It downloads fine so since there is no update, I'll close this worksforme.
