I hate calling etc-update on this.. but I started typing a command in the etc-update window, and it did some not happy things...

lets remember our C days...  characters are numbers too!  well.. when I had a lot of etc-files to update, the letters started to sync up with the #'s!!!

In general, any program that is released as stable, should sanity check user input, actually all input for that matter...
