Description Frank Krömmelbein 2017-01-30 15:42:21 UTC
Black screen on VT7 on my "stable" box during startup, after update of x11-misc/sddm-0.13.0-r3 to 0.14.0-r2 . Problem existed already before the update of Plasma from 5.8.3 to 5.8.5.
On my main machine, this update works as expected.
Copying the sddm.conf from the machine with working sddm did not solve this issue.
revdep-rebuild shows no breakage.
Rebuild of pam, sddm, etc. did not help.
sddm user is in video & audio group.

Workaround for me is downgrade of sddm back to version 0.13.0-r3 .
In the attached archive file are some log files + emerge --info etc.

I ran into the very same issue on my machine using a TV via HDMI as the monitor (this seems to be important).

Using sddm 0.14.0, I only get a black screen with a non blinking cursor instead of the login screen. No errors in Xorg.0.log, sddm.log, the syslog or dmesg.

After a manual downgrade to sdd 0.13.0 using the ebuild from http://gpo.zugaina.org/x11-misc/sddm/ChangeLog (and manually removing the "systemd" pre-set USE flag), sddm works again.
Comment 4 Geoff Madden 2017-03-18 14:48:37 UTC
On my amd64 systemd unit have the same hassle when returning to machine and waking up
the terminal again ,terminal returns with a cursor, but no amount of mouse movement will return the login screen
will return the login screen,as such I'm not able to check on status of updates
.I can goto another vt and restart sddm but never able to return to the original.
A right pain in the rear end this is.

Duplicate of bug #584960 ?
Comment 7 Tobias Leupold 2017-05-14 12:41:50 UTC
I think it's not, as the other bug tells about some trackable error and

[23:47:37.791] (WW) DAEMON: Auth: sddm-helper exited with 3
[23:47:37.798] (II) DAEMON: Greeter stopped.

At least speaking for me, I didn't find any error message. So I think this is a different issue.

Btw. this seems to be fixed in cvs meanwhile (cf. https://github.com/sddm/sddm/issues/799 ), but there's no new release yet.

For me the problem was that sys-devel/gcc-6.3.0 was initially committed defaulting to have USE=pie enabled, which broke lots and lots of other packages, x11-misc/sddm being one of them. (After updating to sys-devel/gcc-6.3.0, I rebuilt the whole system, which made the problem affect all packages, and delayed me syncing the Gentoo tree to a fixed version, since I was still compiling.)

With gcc-5.4.0-r3 is the same.

sddm-0.15.0 was released yesterday, i have attached here:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=629532
a Ebuild which fixes this problem here for me.
