Description Richard Brooklyn 2004-08-13 16:24:32 UTC
Just to let you know, a new version of gdesklets was released eariler today (version 0.30 see http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ ), and an e-build would be greatly appreacted. Thanks.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

A simple copy works perfectly.
Comment 2 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-15 04:22:59 UTC
I'm really not that happy with this version. Do you guys have any problems with it? StarterBar won't work for me, and I've had to patch the source to get it working (to create ~/.gdesklets/Sensors on first run).

Tell me all
Comment 3 Chris Irwin 2004-08-19 08:40:11 UTC
new dependancy: dev-lang/swig
I'm unsure what version, but the latest of 1.3.21 works fine.
Comment 4 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-19 08:55:41 UTC
Allready got it, I'm really waiting for all of the desklets to be updated for 0.30.
Comment 5 will 2004-08-19 11:20:03 UTC
it works well for me. Why not put it in portage as masked or as unstable. Probably masked because the desklet ebuilds don't work that well and a lot of the desklets are not ported yet.
Comment 6 Chris Rebert 2004-08-20 11:07:28 UTC
Isn't this a dupe of bug 55617? It already has an ebuild.
Comment 7 Richard Brooklyn 2004-08-20 14:18:21 UTC
No, .30pre and .30 are actually two different versions.

With the addition of the new builtin shell, aren't all the individual gdesklet ebuilds now unnecessary?

new version of gdesklets came out today as mentioned, i wanted to try out gdesklets for some time and made this quick set of files to give it a go. there was also a new mythtv out today as well for those interested.
Comment 14 Ken Garland 2004-09-10 21:18:18 UTC
there are quite a few dep changes in this one and some added programs in rdeps, here is where i grabbed the list of needed progs from:

http://fatboy.ucd.ie/gdesklets/

(excuse the double post on this, i dont see where to edit my previous comment. also accidentally said gdesklets 0.30 was released today, i had mythtv on the brain)

Thanks for the 0.30 ebuild stuff any reason they are not in the main tree?

for some reason, it seems everything works ok when i manually install desklets in ~/.gdesklets, but not through ebuilds. and the major problem is that when i try to open the 'shell' it closes right away... (not the daemon though).

anyone knows this?

We need to get gnome-python version 2.6 in before this can, it's unusable with pygtk-2.4 + gnome-python 2.0
Comment 23 gad.kadosh 2004-11-07 12:11:30 UTC
any chances the new version will fix my problem with the shell?
Comment 24 Leon Bogaert 2004-11-09 03:16:21 UTC
The new 0.31.1 is out! But Why is gdesklets not in the official portage tree anymore?

ebuild for gdesklets 0.31.1

Here is a revised ebuild for gdesklets 0.31.1
Comment 28 André Lemos 2004-11-16 16:31:43 UTC
did the maintainer died?
Comment 29 Xake 2004-11-16 23:33:19 UTC
#28: With a thought about him commenting here why there is no reason to add the newer version of gdesklet to portage yet (#22) only 12 days ago I think he's not dead at least.

And stop doing that kind of comments (again #28). I have been in fourms and alike were it has been many strange disscussions becouse of posts like yours and people not been able to post for some time to confirm they are alive.

gdesklets-core-0.31.1+dependencies(gnome-python-2.6.0+pyorbit-2.0.1+pygtk-2.4.0)

Everything you need to run gdesklets-core-0.31.1 properly, unpack in
$PORTAGE_OVERLAY.

I know the pyorbit and gnome-python ebuilds are duplicates but here's the
lazypack...
Comment 31 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-19 17:15:35 UTC
As I commented previously, we are waiting for the python maintainers to deal with gnome-python and pyorbit updates. You can get my prelease tarball from

http://dev.gentoo.org/~obz/gdesklets-0.3x-overlay.tar.gz

I apologise for the delay, but we're stuck until we can get the new bindings in.

Thankyou. (yes I am still alive).
Comment 32 Marcos González 2004-11-23 06:00:12 UTC
I'm glad to hear that ;) We'll wait then for the gnome-phyton ebuild. I'm looking forward to having a recent gdesklets ebuild in portage.
Comment 33 gad.kadosh 2004-11-26 04:03:15 UTC
i have installed gdesklets-0.31 from your ebuild, and it works with most desklets though not all. The other problem is that it doesn't start automatically when I launch gnome even though it seems recognized by gnome-session. anyone has similar behaviour or does it work for you?
Comment 34 Doug McMillan 2004-11-30 22:40:08 UTC
I found thius and came looking hoping there was already an ebuild under way for this

gDesklets v0.32pre released! Posted By: chrisime Posted on Nov 28 2004
A new pre-release of gDesklets has been released! Please test it and report useful bugs. There's a known problem in libgtop which (hopefully) has been fixed in CVS. Please don't post those problems in the forum; it's already crowded with these.
Comment 35 Doug McMillan 2004-11-30 22:49:01 UTC
PS to prior post I found this an interesting fact

[cut]
If you intend writing new desklets please don't use any Sensors! They are deprecated since v0.30 and won't work with version >= v0.40 which will be out either in March or April 2005.
[cut]

So any desklet that uses sensors is only compatible with <.30 versions of this
so the desklets will need to be masked on the versions they won't work on
Comment 36 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-01 01:38:35 UTC
No, it's clearly stated as versions >=0.40. 0.3x contains support for both Controls AND Sensors.

Please only post information relevant to this bug in bugzilla, we'll deal with 0.40 when it comes.

"No, it's clearly stated as versions >=0.40. 0.3x contains support for both Controls AND Sensors.

To me that was totally relavent maybe you can explain why it isn't to you?? "D E P R E C A T E D....In dictionaries, deprecated is a term used to indicate a pronunciation or usage that is acknowledged but discouraged. In computer programming, a deprecated language entity is one that is tolerated or supported but not recommended. For example, a number of elements and attributes are deprecated in HTML 4.0, meaning that other means of accomplishing the task are preferred."

I personally have seen a lot of software that has material in it that is deprecated that is supposed to work that doesn't because to a lot of projects deprecate means going away don't baother to test it.
Comment 39 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-01 20:38:52 UTC
0.3x versions use Sensors, Displays and Controls.

This bug is purely about getting the version 0.3x of gDesklets in portage. Future speculation (fyi I understand the term "Deprecation" very well) is inappropriate _for this bug_, hence why it is unrelevant to our current concerns. We'll cross that when we come to it.

Thanks.

Comment 40 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-05 02:04:46 UTC
0.31.1 is in, and I'm still seeing no official word on 0.32, only the pre release, which I won't add until it hits 0.32 official.
Comment 41 Mike Gardiner (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-12-14 01:55:19 UTC
Thanks for everyone on this bug, gdesklets-core-0.32 is in CVS now.

Didn't I clearly comment that version 0.32 has been added to CVS? It's IN PORTAGE.
Thanks everyone
