This is something that needs to be fixed by upstream.

Why is this bug appear to be resolved if there's no fix for it in Portage tree and no resolution yet? I understand that it should be fixed upstream, but it's definitely not resolved for now as some users stuck with this issue. And it's hard to find this bug because by default the searching process here is only working for open bugs and not closed. Could you please clarify which upstream should fix this -- kernel or virtualbox? I tried to find some infromation, but it's not so easy.
Kernel: 4.9.0 Virtualbox: 5.1.10-r1 virtualbox-extpack-oracle: 5.1.10.112026 Virtualbox-modules: 5.1.10 Still broken for me. Not resolved here, so should still be open - in my humble opinion.
Well, what fix do you expect in portage? Maybe a check during prepare phase can be considired as fix for now. Virtualbox blocking a specific kernel package version would be wrong since user can install both 4.9.0 and 4.8.14 and use Virtualbox only with 4.8.14.
