As of portage 2.0.23 masked packages are not being shown in the search results,
although the "Applications found" number includes them.

e.g.:
root # emerge --version
Portage 2.0.23
root # emerge -s gnustep
Searching...   
[ Results for search key : gnustep ]
[ Applications found : 6 ]
