Description Seong-ho Cho 2016-11-23 15:13:14 UTC
in the recent days, i'm seeing below message in every time after emerging any packages,

!!! existing preserved libs:
>>> package: sys-libs/binutils-libs-2.27
 *  - /usr/lib64/libbfd-2.25.1.so
 *      used by /usr/lib64/binutils/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/2.25.1/libopcodes-2.25.1.so (sys-devel/binutils-2.25.1-r1)
Use emerge @preserved-rebuild to rebuild packages using these libraries

I tried emerge =sys-devel/binutils-2.25.1-r1 from time to time, but it is not removed from above list. I don't know where this problem occurs.

i don't know what i should upload to refer what causes this problem.
ummm... maybe.... this problem is similar to #255303 , right?

Same for me. emerge @preserved-rebuild rebuilds binutils-2.25.1-r1 and does not clear preserved libs.:

Comment 2 Andreas Oehler 2016-11-25 07:48:38 UTC
Ok, i think i could fix that one for myself. But care - this could wreck your build-chain. Maybe someone could confirm.

I found that building emerge -v1 sys-libs/binutils-libs created binutils-libs-2.27.
However in the end i got:
... //SNIP// ..
>> /usr/lib32/libopcodes-2.27.so
>>> /usr/lib32/libopcodes.so -> libopcodes-2.27.so
>>> /usr/lib32/libbfd.so -> libbfd-2.27.so
>>> /usr/lib32/libbfd-2.27.so
>>> /usr/lib32/libiberty.a
>>> needed    obj /usr/lib64/libbfd-2.25.1.so
...
--- replaced sym /usr/lib64/libopcodes.so
--- replaced obj /usr/lib64/libopcodes-2.27.so
--- replaced obj /usr/lib64/libiberty.a
--- replaced sym /usr/lib64/libbfd.so
--- replaced obj /usr/lib64/libbfd-2.27.so
--- replaced obj /usr/lib64/libbfd-2.25.1.so
--- replaced dir /usr/lib64
...

so it seems this is a multi-layer isue: binutils links falsely to libbfd-2.25 in addition to 2.27. Somehow then the rebuild runs into a loop rebuildiding libbfd-2.25 instead of removing the link from binutils-libs-2.27.
What i did (and i still hope i did not break important things, still gcc seems to be working):
mv /usr/lib64/libbfd-2.25.1.so trash
emerge -v1 sys-libs/binutils-libs

removed the @preserved-rebuild.
And i think a depclean also suggests me to remove the 2.25 and 2.26 versions. I wonder why 2.26 got skipped but 2.25 seems to remain slipped in somehow...

you can rm the files in /usr/lib64/ once you're sure all other packages have been rebuilt to use the new version
