I have been looking through the old ebuilds and it appears that the || ( www-client/links www-client/lynx ) dependency first appeared with the initial commit of 2.2-r2 [1]. The latest CVS revision of 2.2.-r1 did not have the RDEPEND set.[2] The commit message for 2.2-r2 does not mention why the dependency was added. The sources of the oldest and newest versions available in the tree now suggest links/lynx are never used, or perhaps the call strings are obfuscated. The sources do mention "links" as in symbolic links and alike, and "lynx" as referred to in "lynxos". It seems that the dependency is entirely unnecessary.
