Hi! I noticed that galculator support both GTK+ 2.0 and GTK+ 3.0 libraries. However, in the tree, the ebuilds support GTK+ 3.0 only. So if anyone disable the GTK+ 3.0 support, it falls back to GTK+ 2.0, which is very useful in GTK+ 2.0 environments, such as MATE. So please, enable the gtk3 useflag.

My suggestion of an ebuild is something like that:
