I tried to install Gentoo 2004.1 from stage3-i686-2004.1.tar.bz2 I couldn't follow all the steps in Installation Manual because I couldn't run wget, which means I can emerge anything either. When I run wget or another program that uses libcrypto.so.0.9.7 like ssh, slogin, sftp.... I got the following error message and quits: wget: error while loading shared libraries: libcrypto.so.0.9.7: cannot enable executable stack as shared object requires: Error 14 I chatted with people in #gentoo and the forums and nobody could help me. After a couple of hours, I decided to re-install wget to continue Gentoo installation. emerge wget And it complained because it couldn't find ssl (all the libs are at /usr/lib) then I did a: USE="-ssl" emerge wget And I could install the Gentoo distro!
sounds like you used the hardened stage and/or -fstack-protector `emerge info` ? URL where you grabbed the stage ?
SpanKY: It's strange. I also downloaded stage3-x86-2004.1.tar.bz2 and I having the same problems than stage3-i686-2004.1.tar.bz2 For instance, from x86 file this is the 'emerge info' data: Portage 2.0.50-r5 (default-x86-2004.0, gcc-3.3.2, glibc-2.3.2-r9, 2.4.18-bf2.4) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.18-bf2.4 i686 Pentium II (Deschutes) Gentoo Base System version 1.4.3.13 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.58-r1 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i386-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -mcpu=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="" I got both files from gentoo.oregonstate.edu (now: gentoo.osuosl.org) Is those files broken for a Pentium II ???

I am closing this one now. I don't have reports on this for .2 so I suppose it is fixed. I also didn't experience that when running the pre-release-tests for .2. Reopen if the problem still exists.
this is Bug 31680
