There is a new version (5.6.0) available at http://www.qt.io/download-open-source/
qt overlay
It would be nice to see it in portage proper soon, as it fixes my problem with SDDM. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1039378.html?sid=bf686448ebb3d837ff6fab6a725f4180
There are more nasty bugs being sorted out in 5.6, e.g. . . . https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG-49952 . . . https://codereview.qt-project.org/#/c/144990/ and so forth ... But nevertheless, please, allow the QT team an appropriate period of time to do their "job" proper. Qt 5.6 was only released on Wednesday, March 16th, 2016. Thanks. Manfred
FWIW I've been running 5.6 since beta and would be happy to see it in tree as soon as the qtwebkit build bugs are fixed.
Qt 5.6 completely breaks KDE, so be careful.
(In reply to Nikos Chantziaras from comment #5) > Qt 5.6 completely breaks KDE, so be careful. can you elaborate on the breakage? I heard of many KDE devs who are already running QT 5.6 and never heard about a big showstopper bug.
(In reply to Till Schäfer from comment #6) > can you elaborate on the breakage? I heard of many KDE devs who are already > running QT 5.6 and never heard about a big showstopper bug. Plasma doesn't work. So the desktop is non-functional. In particular, the panel is empry. No task bar, no systray, no nothing. Just a "K" button that doesn't do anything.
(In reply to Nikos Chantziaras from comment #5) > Qt 5.6 completely breaks KDE, so be careful. Hm no, it should work fine. You need a kde-frameworks/frameworkintegration rebuild Or, emerge -av1 `qlist -IC kde-frameworks/ kde-plasma/` works here fine.

Rebuilding kde-frameworks/frameworkintegration didn't help anything. I'm now rebuilding the whole of frameworks and plasma. Let's see if that will help.
Well, it was still broken. I then logged in into a new account and it was working fine there. Normally, when something like this happens, I do: $ rm ~/.kde5 But nope, there's no ~/.kde5 directory. Or even just ~/.kde. Just ~/.kde4 which doesn't help. So, I'm out of luck. My user account doesn't work with Qt 5.6.

Unfortunately, both issues don't show up in RoadMap -> Version 5.6.1 issues yet: https://bugreports.qt.io/browse/QTBUG/fixforversion/15305/?selectedTab=com.atlassian.jira.jira-projects-plugin:version-summary-panel
@qt, any objection to proceeding now?
I am currently observing fetch failures: Bug 579352
a small (incomplete) test feedback: after the bug was fixed, it works like a charm with plasma 5.5.6 and frameworks 5.21.
Thanks everyone, this is now bumped in git from the overlay. https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/commit/?id=421e93435a836b5245edd3e97a533ab806941e91
