Description tharvik 2016-01-04 13:07:10 UTC
I'm proxy maint for www-client/uzbl.

IMHO, the project is slowly dying; there is nearly no activity on the git nor the mailing list or the bug tracker. There was no stable release for about three years.

In general, the project need a big rewrite, to better use webkit2; which don't seems to be happening.

Also, there exist some good alternative, like vimb, vimprobable2 or vimperator.

From that, I think we can mask/remove it from tree.

I think the best would be to create a pull-request with the removal on github.

Well, it’s that dead because there is actually still some activity on the git repo(December 2015 for master and next branches) and IRC channel, but maybe it have to go to some archive/experimental/whatever overlay.

uzbl seems to be the only one which is really towards UNIX Philosophy and with various language-indepedent IPC communication.

It’s another “issue” but www-client/dwb seems to be more dead and with less differences with the more active/“lively” alternatives.

There is hardly any activity and mostly small pull requests. One important part too is the bug tracker, inactive to say the least.

IMHO, I do not think that it is going a good path: there is a great need to rewrite much parts for support for WebKit2 and it do not seems to be happening (http://www.uzbl.org/bugs/index.php?do=details&task_id=370)

Also, there was no stable release for about 3 years (http://www.uzbl.org/news.php?id=40 for the last release, http://www.uzbl.org/news.php?id=32 for a funny "3 months since the last release? That's too long.").

I agree with you, there is no much alternatives for this side of things. You can obtain some similarities using vimb though (good configuration, exec commands thus scripting when an event occurs, ...).

True, but I can not really do anything with it, I'm not proxy-maint for it.

Disregard please.

The uzbl project is moving forward, I decided to become a contributor so now it is getting even more support. There have been several issues resolved and one release made in the past two weeks. The next cool thing planned is webkit 2.0 support which will be available in the next release (we are working on that).
You have cited no bugs in the package making it worth removing, just that it uses an older library which is not a problem since webkit is slot'ed.
I suggest you add it back again in the main repo.

Please file a separate bug. The removal has been dealt with and adding uzbl back to the tree needs to be addressed in another bug. Thank you.
