Description Patrick Lauer gentoo-dev 2015-12-14 12:25:59 UTC
After update only "GRUB" is shown on screen and no further progress.

Running grub-install from sysrescuecd fixes, so older versions do not exhibit this failure mode.

Device is a Lenovo X250 notebook with primary disk configured as GPT.

Portage 2.2.26 (python 2.7.11-final-0, default/linux/amd64/13.0/desktop/kde, gcc-4.9.3, glibc-2.22-r1, 4.3.0-gentoo x86_64)

The -O0 hack (which is the only thing different from -r14, aside from potentially newer ncurses and other dependencies) has been removed in -r17 in favour of a proper patch to fix the runtime isssues detailed in bug 564890; with testing hopefully this will restore expected behaviour at bootup as well.

I will try and configure a testbed to try locally, but if you beat me too it please let me know if it works.

I just did a GPT+MBR test with a standard stable amd64 system, and it succeeded fine with -r16. I even attempted to run a mixed -r14 and -r16 (ie, what happens if you don't update the stage1) and it worked without issue.

Unfortunately I don't know what to do to try and reproduce this failure. Any suggestions you may have would be a big help. Mayhaps it was simply due to a one-off bad grub-install result??

Either way i suggest testing -r17. If you can report back it's success or failure I would very much appreciate it!

I also had this problem on an all-stable 32-bit system. I had to use the grub shell from SystemRescueCD to reinstate the bootstrap with the usual root/setup command sequence.

This is on an old AMD Athlon MP box with an ISA BIOS and using traditional partition tables. The BIOS would load grub and then hang with GRUB on the screen.

Thanks for reporting!

Could you provide the use flags to grub:0? Also, did you try the -r17 version and if so did it work any better?

grub:0 is gone
