Description Dmitry Grigoriev 2015-09-12 11:46:22 UTC
Hi.

Note 1: Sorry, I have no idea how to reproduce it, also already fell back to gcc 4.8.4 which fixed the problem, so I only hope someone else faced this issue too and would be able to provide more useful info.

Note 2: I've got laptop with nVidia Optimus and use bumblebee+virtualgl but the bug showed itself without me starting optirun, on just intel video.

Not so long ago stable gcc was upgraded from 4.8.4 to 4.8.5. After I applied that update along some other package updates and done `emerge -e @system` + `emerge -e @world` + rebuilt kernel, I've got window draw/redraw issues in many apps I use (mostly KDE: konqueror, ksysguard, knetwalk, unlock screen login prompt, also in skype; but NOT konsole, firefox, JetBrains IDEA). Not immediately after system reboot, but in few minutes/hours after. It looks like applies only to newly created windows (hm, maybe I didn't face it on konsole, firefox and IDEA because I didn't try to restart them?). Skype windows show just empty background, ksysguard window looks like it does not erase background before redrawing texts every second, knetwalk shows few cells around cursor flickering on every mouse move (and also mouse-over event is triggered ~20px above actual mouse position - looks like window decoration is not taken into account somehow) but all other window area is just empty background (without background image).

Had no idea why and what to do, hard-masked gcc 4.8.5, reverted back to gcc 4.8.4 and rebuilt system+kernel+world, everything's OK for a more than day for now.

I recalled I used to start simple card game under wine AFTER bug shows itself and that game (new window) redrew itself correctly. So NOT every newly created window shows the bug.
Comment 3 Dmitry Grigoriev 2015-09-23 16:11:01 UTC
Faced same glitch once in system compiled with gcc 4.8.4 but that fixed itself after some time without reboot. Upgraded to gcc ~4.9.3 - same bad as 4.8.5.

Then upgraded xf86-video-intel 2.99.917 -> ~2.99.917-r2 and downgraded wine ~1.7.51 -> ~1.7.47 (got some vague suspicions about it and also recalled I upgraded it approximately the same time as gcc) => all ok for 3 days of heavy usage now.
Comment 4 Dmitry Grigoriev 2015-09-23 18:06:21 UTC
Damn, I knew bug would show itself right after I said it's gone. Now disappeared after I quit and restarted IDEA (dev-java/icedtea ~7.2.6.1). Feels like making my paths through minefield.
Comment 5 Dmitry Grigoriev 2015-10-02 09:16:10 UTC
Looks like I've pinned it down. Next time I faced redraw bug (same day as my last comment, i.e. more than week ago) I tried to restart some apps from console to see possible errors logged. Found something, e.g.:

$ kdesudo -u me-skype /opt/bin/skype
ALSA lib /var/tmp/portage/media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.29/work/alsa-lib-1.0.29/src/pcm/pcm_dmix.c:1006:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC shm instance
[apulse] [error] do_connect_pcm, snd_pcm_open, No space left on device

Still, I've got lots of free RAM and free space on /dev/shm (almost 8GB).

Googling found me this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=200184 Proposed solution was to downgrade java. Not sure why dev-java/icedtea-7.2.5.6-r1 is hard-masked but downgrading from 7.2.6.1 to it looks like solved the problem completely: no any signs of bug for more than a week of heavy usage without reboots.

The only question remains is what exactly java did to system resulting in such a strange bug.

What does `ipcs` command show in this case?

We had similar issue with apache: it didn't clean semaphores in some cases (probably after a graceful restart). This has forced us to workaround the issue by increasing limits via "kernel.sem" sysctl parameter. :)

I can't give any further insight into this bug but 7.2.5.6-r1 is only there to support ppc because the latest version is broken on that arch for an entirely different reason. There's no harm in using it on other arches though.

I think this bug or bug 561500 should be marked as duplicate.
Comment 9 Dmitry Grigoriev 2015-10-08 13:15:19 UTC
Sorry, it would take too long to recompile java and wait for bug to check ipcs output.

Better keep that other bug 561500, there are more people there and no misleading comments about gcc.
Comment 10 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2015-10-10 22:19:25 UTC
I'll make this bug the duplicate since the other one is clearer.
