net-libs/libstrophe is "a minimal XMPP library written in C". Some XMPP clients are built on top of it, thus my request to include it in Gentoo.

libstrophe-0.8.8-fix-autoconf-libxml2.patch

A patch is required to make --without-libxml2 work. Submitted upstream: https://github.com/strophe/libstrophe/pull/68
