As per bug #432918 some symlinks are needed for vmplayer to run.
The libs that are symlinked was updated in the vmware's bundle so the ebuild needs to reflect such a change.
I'll attach the diff between the old and the new ebuild.

Thanks, this looks like it's probably a better solution than the one used in vmware-player ebuilds. I'll check it out :-).

Added to -r2 in the overlay, work in progress...

Andreas, although updating layman -> vmware overlay today,
it seems it has not arrived in overlay -
neither in -r2 nor in -r3.

VMware Products have been removed from Main Portage Tree during Nov-2017.

Further development has been relegated to [vmware] Overlay.

Situation as of today, 30-Nov-2017:
