The stage3 file (well one i have test stage3-i686-20150526.tar.bz2) lack sys-devel/bc it is a critcal tool to build a kernel. Normally this is not a problem as it's a dependency (at least) for gentoo-sources, but people not using gentoo provided kernel will not get the dependency or people that have no internet connection that forgot to also download the bc package. Providing bc will eat a few more space but anyone could build a kernel with it Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.untar a stage3 2.untar a kernel 3.cd /usr/src/linux && make -> fail
If you don't want to let emerge handle your dependencies, handle your dependencies yourself. If you are not intersted in gentoo patches, emerge vanilla-sources. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 494952 ***
