I have mplayer version 1.2_pre20150214 and ffmpeg 2.6.1 - works perfectly. So, the only thing that is needed here is switching to ~amd64 for mplayer, since ffmpeg is ~amd64

The version which is going to be stable is media-video/mplayer-1.2_pre20150214 (according to the bug you mentioned). But this bug report is about media-video/mplayer-1.2_pre20130729. These are not the same. Unless the non-fixed version is masked in some way, or removed from the tree, the bug will still exist. This could indeed be fixed by correcting the dependencies in media-video/mplayer-1.2_pre20130729.
At the time when I opened this bug libav was the default setting for gentoo. As you can see in comment 3, I have used libav at that time. And with libav it is still not possible to compile mplayer. For this reason, I would not close the bug.
