after updating from sys-cluster/util-vserver-0.30.216_pre3025-r1, vserver behaves very strangely: /etc/init.d/vservers.default takes ages to start (4~5 minutes?), manages to say "ok", but no vserver is actually started. I can start them by hand (vserver web restart). "/etc/init.d/vservers.default stop" will act the same (very very long, does nothing, i can still enter my vserver). Switching back to sys-cluster/util-vserver-0.30.216_pre3038-r2 makes everything work again. There's also this verdi ~ # vserver-stat Segmentation fault (core dumped) But it does it whatever the version of util-vserver is installed .. Reproducible: Always

Did some more tests today. Still very broken. On boot, it stalls on vservers.default. I can ssh and check with pstree, i got this : .. | `-{ntpd},2614 |-rc,1249 default | `-vservers.defaul,3507 /etc/init.d/vservers.default --lockfd 48 start | `-runscript.sh,3508 /lib64/rc/sh/runscript.sh /etc/init.d/vservers.default start |-rpc.mountd,2996 .. So it's not even something from vserver but the openrc stuff that is blocking. Of course i ran dispatch-conf and i use the last init.d/vservers.default Also i can confirm that the process finally dies and even coredumps (my system is configured so): /tmp/cores/runscript.sh.6656 I got a backtrace, but that's from the bash executing the openrc script, not sure it's really useful. I can't find anything interesting in it anyway. One important thing is that the following works : vserver web start Which is the non-openrc way of starting a vserver. Once started, everything works as usual. I can enter the vserver, and i can do vserver-stat Which display one line for the 'web' vserver. (isn't it supposed to display another line for the host ? can't remember). Not sure about what that means, but i also got this : verdi ~ # /usr/libexec/util-vserver/vserver-wrapper status vservers of type 'default' are not started
Forgot to say, i tried both with an old kernel (3.13.6-vs2.3.6.11, which works perfectly with previous gentoo util-vserver), and a recent one, 3.18.7-vs2.3.7.4. Got the same result.
You might want to try building util-vserver with a vanilla gcc, it solved the problem for me. I haven't tried the nopie/nossp/nopiessp versions, they might be worth investigating, too. Also, I do not believe it is specific to pre3062, as I got similar results when building pre3038-r1.

Although I use 4.8.3, with -vanilla I get a working vserver-stat at least. However, I agree that the vservers.default initscript appears to be broken as in runs in an endless loop without actually doing anything. I'll report this upstream.

I believe it should fix the issue with vservers.default, which was pretty trivial after all.
i patched the init.d file by hand (added the two 'source' lines). And indeed, it now works well ! Am I the only user of this ebuild ????
Just realized I unnecessarily used ${} expansion in the patch … Well there are few users out there and no maintainer any longer, as far as I can tell.
Patch has been merged upstream. Perhaps now would be a good time for a bump to 0.30.216_pre3113 ?

For at least the last ~5 years, almost nothing has changed for sys-cluster/util-vserver (and maybe sys-kernel/vserver-sources, i don't really know for this one, i don't use it). http://linux-vserver.org/Developers mentions a guy "maintaining" gentoo ebuilds, but i haven't seen him for very long in vserver-related tickets. This ticket for example, is still assigned to "default assignee for orphaned packages". That says a lot. You say the patch has been merged, but i can't find the source repository from http://linux-vserver.org/... ? Where can i see this ?
Folks, I've been using sys-cluster/util-vserver-0.30.216_pre3062 on my server for over a month and I haven't noticed any of the problem mentioned in this ticket. This ebuild, as well as sys-kernel/vserver-sources-2.3.7.4, works flawlessly. Since it is blocking the stabilisation call, I shall close it then.
