Can you try mutt-1.5.23-r5? This is supposed to be fixed in 1.5.23 . Also, paste your emerge --info output, just for reference.
If I look at the available versions I have: $ temanbk tema # ls /usr/portage/mail-client/mutt/*.ebuild /usr/portage/mail-client/mutt/mutt-1.5.22-r3.ebuild /usr/portage/mail-client/mutt/mutt-1.5.23-r6.ebuild /usr/portage/mail-client/mutt/mutt-1.5.23-r5.ebuild Now, both of 1.5.23 (-r5 and -r6) result in the described bug. I agree that this is supposed to be fixed, however look at the FreeBSD bug, they are having troubles with 1.5.23 as well. As you might guess, my mutt setup worked fine prior to the cleanup and now I am experiencing this visual issue with Gentoo. The rest works as expected. @Fabian: You can have a look at my configuration if you wish but I suspect something is up with the sidebar patch. I thought I diffed mine/ours with theirs, and saw much more diffs than just a fix. I'll look at it again. On a side-note, upstream is planning to do a new release, which might mean an official updated sidebar patch.
I can confirm this with maildir. I only use IMAP, which explains why I didn't see it before. I think I know where the problem is.
The problem is your folder has a trailing /, that's why it cuts one char too many.
The fix is in mutt-1.5.23-r8
